Evaluation

To evaluate my media texts, there are four questions I need to answer. As a group we discussed how to get the most interactive and varied media style responses. This is how I will answer my evaluation questions:

Q1 - Group discussion podcast
Q2 - Prezi presentation
Q3 - Powerpoint
Q4 - Essay on word

Final Poster

This is my final poster. I have changed my font from that that I previously discussed because it was too complicated and stood out for the wrond reasons. So I have now gone for just a bold white text to really stand out on the black and kept the blood splatters to retain that sense of violence.

Creating Poster

As I wanted the main part of my poster to be the actual image, the rest of it will be kept quite minimal. I have used the font that I have included on here before which used some of the images I had taken of the trailer as the fill for the text. I have now added some red splattering to some of the letters to represent blood and add a sense of gory-ness to the poster.

I think the blood adds extra texture and dimensions to the title and decorates the word 'dead' again making it appear more sinister.

Edited photo

This is my final edited image. It has taken me a long time to get to this stage and I am happy with it. If I have more time later on I could come back to it and alter the colour arrangement, but I think that it works well with my genre and creates the effect I was looking for. The dark colours are mysterious and immediately make the audience feel uneasy, and the dark cloudy sky looks like a storm is brewing which could be a metaphor for the events in the film.

Creating my Poster Image

For my poster image, I was pretty sure that what I wanted was a photo of my house, and after experimenting with a few shots, I have found the one that I am going to use:
I have chosen this image becuase it is like an outisder looking in and the branches make it look potentially eerie. To edit my image I firt set it to grayscale and then used photoshop to edit it further. Initially, I thought that I would be able to do this by using a gradient tool to darkent the edges and draw attention into the front door. This however didn't turn out to work as the lines were clearly visible and I could not get the effect I was after. I then tried to experiment with the techniques myself trying to fit a tool that would give me the effect that I wanted, but in the end I used found an online tutorial to show me how to uses the tools avaliable to me.

New Images

I have taken a new range of shots that I could use for my poster. I thought that I needed to get more shots from different angles and aslo that it would be easier to take a photo in daylight and edit it to look dark rather than start with a drak image becuase it has less detail.

Poster Research

I think that the poster for Cherry Tree Lane is very relevant to my research as it is of the same sub-genre; the hoody horror, and after researching further I have found that the plot line is somewhat simliar as it also features a couple who's home is invaded by evil strangers. The structure and layout of this poster is very simple and immediately draws the audience's attention to the doorway in the centre of the compostition which is also the lightest area of the poster. I think that the lighting in the photography and editing it very important on movie posters as the audience doesn't always have a look time to study the images, so by manipulating the lighting it draws the attention to the most important part of the image, and also enables things to be hidden and add a mysterious and scary undertone of the unknown. I think the title on this poster is clever as it resembles a house/road name plaque and so the design semantically links to the genre and theme of the movie. The blood splats that cover it and also appear on the open door give a obvious clue of what is to come, and suggests that this movie will feature violence and death. This again is a really important feature of the poster, becuase although so far we have no idea who the victim is the audience are able to fear for them and empathise straight away. The manipulation of the image of the hooded figure adds to the mystery of the poster as you can only partially see them, however it does also give away details as to the antagonist character in this movie. This poster also complys to the genre conventions with its use of the colours red, white and black. The black background is featured on many horror movie images as it creates alot of contrast with other colours and is accossiated with fear, darkness and the unknown. By surrounding the character and house in black, it gives the impression that the homeowners are surrounded by darkness and evil. The colour red is always linked to danger, death, blood etc and is a common genre convention of horror movies. The dark red used on this cover accentuates the bright white light on the house. White represents innocence and therefore the victims and here is also used to contrast the dark colours.

Poster

Today I have started work on my poster which although I haven't yet finished my magazine cover, I think it would be a good idea to make a start on both so that I have plenty of time to edit them later after feedback and keep a continuing theme between them. I want to use an image of my house on the front of my poster, as I really like the design of the 'Last House on the Left' poster that I looked at during my research and the idea of not featuring the characters on the poster, to make the poster slightly more intriguing for the audience. To begin with, I started my poster with a black background to fulfill the conventions of the horror genre and I began looking into images and fonts that I could use. The fonts I looked at are a similar style to those for my magazine cover becuase I think it is important to carry the themes and create decisions I have made about the appearance of our trailer on the magazine cover over to the poster. This creates a signature font for the movie, and would really stand out to an audience.

I am not sure yet how I want the image to feature on my poster, but at the moment I wanted to look at experimenting with how I can edit my current images to create possible effects for my poster.
I have experimented here with the fill of my text using picture that I have taken of the charcters and settings from our trailer. I think that some of these work really well and create some interesting depth to the text. I have made it black and white in these examples but I could also look at using a colour filter of using the original image colours. I think that the third example is the most effective and I will look into using this on either my poster or magazine cover.

Photos

The photos we took on our last filming seesion were to give us an idea of what we wanted to do and could be done. I don't feel like we have collected enough yet but we did get a few that look quite good. My focus today was looking at possibilities for my poster cover, and my idea of a shot from outside the house. These are the first few photos that I took...

Although these photos show what effect I wanted, I'm not sure that any of them are best for my poster cover yet. I like the branches in the foreground of the second one as they are illuminated by the camera flash and obsturct the view as in picture 2 with the trees which creates a scary image as with fear of the unknown. It also personifies the antagonist of the movie by looking from their point of view and hiding amongst the trees.

Filming

Today we finished filming! All of our scenes are now complete and we started to take the photos for our magazine covers and posters. After considering many options and lining up many shots I think that the best idea for my poster is an outdoor shot of my house (the setting) in the dark with lights on in the windows and maybe a full moon surrounded by clouds in the sky. I was able to take a few test photos and will upload these onto our Flickr account and later onto this blog. I am quite happy with this idea and the set-up reminds me of the cover for 'Last House on the Left'.

I like the composition of this poster and I think that it will inspire my ideas when I start to create my own. I really like the grayscale colour scheme which creates an old and mysterious look on the cover. The bright red in the word 'house' really attracts the attention of the audience and the decaying blood-like font creates semantic genre connotations.

The use of an eroded or decaying font is something I have looked at before in my research and I think that this would definitely work well on my poster. In terms of me creating a scary image of my house, I will try to take images in the dark, but it might be that when it comes to editing I will get a more successful result by taking it in daylight and then editing it later.

I don't want to compose my poster exactly the same as this poster, but the techniques  and conventions used in it are appropriate to my work and really resemble the effect I wanted to create.

Beginning Poster

I now need to focus on starting my movie poster. I will look at existing posters and analyse them to assess the conventions that are used and develop these techniques to include them in my own work. In the next part of my project, I will find examples of film posters and include them in my work to support my research.

Magazine Cover Development

So far, my magazine looks like this:

I am happy with this image becuase I think it suits the genre and purpose of my magazine and that it fulfils the convnetions of magazine covers. There are still some pieces I want to add onto this, and this is what I will do this lesson. From looking at my research into other magazines, I am looking into adding a banner onto the bottom of my cover and some more text down the left hand side. I don't want to take away from the photo, but I also don't want to leave huge amounts of blank space at either side. The title of my magazine I feel is effective and I think that the font is coherant with that used for magazine covers and the limited colour scheme is effective.

So, after this session, I have been able to add more to my cover and I am now quite have that it is almost complete. These are two shots of how my cover has progressed.
I have added a circle of text, which is a common feature of professional magazines. I think this is an effective technique because it breaks up the text of the cover into readable phrases and also attracts attention as the audiences eyes are drawn into different areas of the cover. I hate also added a barcode which is of course a feature of magazines and also a price lable. These few touches make the overall composition look more professional and adhere to the codes and conventions I have found previously in my research stages.

I have now almost finised my cover. Im am really happy with this outcome and although I may make a few extra changes to it at a later stage, I am happy to keep this as my final magazine cover. I have used a big, bold and clear font for the actors name and the audiences attention is directly attracted to this part of the composistion. I have also added a banner which is another common feature of magazines and to soften the colour I have made it partcially transparent.

Magazine Progress

This is the original image that I will use for my magaizne cover. I have chosen this because Ben is looking straight into the camera which communicates with and involves the audience and this is a feature I picked up on during my magazine research. It also represents the film well as he plays the villian and gives the audience a clear signal of the hoody-horror genre that our movie fits into. In this picture, Ben is holding the knife which is again a symbol of what is to come from the film, however for my shot, I would like to focus just on his face and use a close up from this photo.

The colours of this image also work well; the black on his leather jacket is a key convention of horror movies and represents mystery and darkness. The white background adds a sense of innocence however in this case this is more representative of the actor because the article is an interview with him - this contrasts the two characters.

At first, I cut down the image to the size an proportions that I wanted and I then had to remove the background. As this could not be done by setting it as a transparent colour, I needed to cut the image out and then place it on a solid white background. I did this by using photoshop expert and the magic wand tool to get rid of most of the back ground and then to neaten the edges I used the eraser tool.

Once I had done this, I was then able to place the image onto my magazine front cover. My cover is now starting to take shape. I have chosen a simple tonal colour scheme of black and red which I think keeps my cover looking neat even though I have used various fonts to make sections of text stand out, and also gives it a more professional aesthetic.
